Description
xEterra EX-40 Flail Mower for Excavator
The Eterra EX-40 flail mower is the largest in the EX-Series, built for excavators from 9,000 to 20,000 lbs running 8–50 GPM. It handles grass, brush and material up to 4–5 inches — heavier than either smaller model — while keeping the contained downward discharge that makes a flail safe alongside traffic and property. Hydraulic hoses, couplers, a machine-specific mount and a chain guard are all included. Available from Skid Steer Store.
Why the EX-40
- 4–5" material capacity — takes on heavier brush than the EX-30 or EX-30M.
- Contained discharge — knives throw down into the housing, not out at traffic and windows.
- Chain guard included — added containment as standard.
- Knives pivot on impact — rock or stump swings the knife back rather than shearing a driveline.
- Laser balanced drum — less vibration through the boom on a heavier attachment.
- Mount included — a machine-specific mount ships with every EX flail mower.
EX-Series Comparison
| Model | Carrier Weight | Flow | Material Capacity | Thumb Saddle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EX-30M | 2,200–7,000 lbs | 8–26 GPM | Grass and brush | — |
| EX-30 | 7,000–14,000 lbs | 8–50 GPM | Grass and brush | Available |
| EX-40 | 9,000–20,000 lbs | 8–50 GPM | Up to 4–5" | Available |
The EX-30 and EX-40 overlap between 9,000 and 14,000 lbs. In that band, choose the EX-40 if you cut heavier material and the EX-30 if you want less weight at full boom extension.
Thumb Saddle Option
If your excavator runs a thumb, order the With Thumb Saddle configuration. The saddle seats the thumb against the mower housing so it can stay fitted rather than being removed each time you swap to the flail. Select it above — it is installed with your order, not shipped loose.
Selecting Your Flow Range
| Option | Choices | How to Decide |
|---|---|---|
| Flow Rate | 15–21, 21–28, 26–35, 32–41, 37–50 GPM | Match the bracket containing your excavator's rated auxiliary flow |
| Thumb Saddle | No Thumb Saddle / With Thumb Saddle | Order with saddle if your excavator has a thumb |
Hose & Coupler Configuration
Hydraulic hoses and couplers are included with every EX-40. Coupler size and case drain specification are matched to your machine at order time rather than selected above — contact Skid Steer Store with your excavator's make and model and we will confirm both before your order ships.
Your Mount Is Included
Do not order a separate excavator mount for this attachment. Eterra includes a machine-specific mount with every EX-Series flail mower — adding one from our Attachment Mounts listing would charge you twice. Additional mounting options are available if you need to run it on a second carrier.
Common Applications
Highway and interstate right-of-way, heavy brush along drainage and utility corridors, embankment and levee maintenance, overgrown lot reclamation, canal banks, forestry edge work, and municipal contract mowing on heavier vegetation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size excavator do I need?
9,000 to 20,000 lbs with auxiliary hydraulics rated 8–50 GPM.
EX-40 or EX-30?
They overlap from 9,000 to 14,000 lbs. Choose the EX-40 for heavier material up to 4–5", or the EX-30 for less weight at full extension.
Is the mount included?
Yes. A machine-specific mount ships with every EX-Series flail mower. Do not order one separately.
Do I need the thumb saddle?
Only if your excavator has a thumb. The saddle lets the thumb stay fitted while running the mower.
How do I specify coupler size and case drain?
Both are included and matched to your machine at order time. Contact Skid Steer Store with your make and model.
